So, you're an ambitious Chiropractic clinic owner who is eager to grow and scale their business and you are either new to hiring, or you have had a string of bad employees that for one reason or another just haven't worked out. You're maybe looking at other Chiropractic clinics and wondering how the heck they do it?
I owned my first clinic when I was 23 years old. I took over a failing practice in Perth, Scotland, and set out to turn it around. I remember interviewing candidates for a CA position who were older than my parents, and I bet they were thinking who the hell is this kid? My first CA, who is now my practice manager of 12 years, didn't speak to me for a week after I did her first performance review. Don't worry, I've worked on them since then! I've had a team member tell me they didn't want to get adjusted, because they respected their neck; and another CA used to ask my patients if they thought Chiropractic really worked! Talk about hiring the right people for your team.
Even with all these hiccups I was passionate and hungry to grow my business, and through thick or thin that was what I was going to do. I worked Monday to Friday in my clinic and spent the weekends at shows and events screening potential clients and filling up the coming weeks. I bought the property that we rented and spent £80,000 renovating it. I bought a van, branded it and kitted it up with everything we needed for corporate screenings and events. We worked hard!
However, when it came to hiring associates, this was a major problem. I advertised on association websites and magazines for months and months with absolutely no success. Eventually, I hired my first associate and he was a great guy! Kind of lucky as he was the only one I interviewed. Long story short I realised hiring associates was a major problem within the profession and decided to set up my own job board specifically for Chiropractors world-wide. I invested £12,000 into building a custom website (big mistake!). This pretty much became a second business, apart form the fact instead of paying me, I continued to pay it to improve it and hire advertising and marketing gurus to get it going. I can't tell you how many people I hired to work on this, but the end result is I learnt A LOT about websites, marketing, advertising, social media, email campaigns, funnels, branding, audience building, affiliate programs, you name it!

Throughout this time I became increasingly frustrated that I had reached a plateau in my practice growth and it was time to do something about it. I also wanted to have a bigger impact on my clients health, which lead me to an 8 Weeks to Wellness seminar. I was sold. 1 month later I bought a 5000 sq/ft high street shop and set about renovating it and integrating the systems. At the time it was one of the most stressful times of my life. I was adjusting clients, running four blocks over to manage the builders, running back to see more clients and then back to sort out issues.
I now have a stunning practice and over the years I have hired countless team members; and throughout the process I have had many successes and many failures. I don't think you will ever stop learning when it comes to hiring and managing your team, but one thing I do know is if you are not crystal clear on your vision, your business, who you are and what you do, and your values, you will never be able to attract and keep the right team.
